Our upcoming production in 2022 is Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Christopher Hampton,
directed by Lucy Jepson.
In the circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Society has had to suspend work on our next production, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, originally to be staged from 22th to 25th April 2020.
The University offered SUDS a slot in the Drama Studio for the week of 7 November 2021, and invited us to sign the usual hire agreement. But this agreement came with a rider spelling out numerous Covid-related conditions and restrictions which the university will or might be required to impose on performers and audiences. Many of these have become commonplace in restaurants and other public venues, but would create significant administrative and other burdens for a Society such as ours. Furthermore we would have only limited access to parts of the theatre, and rehearsal rooms will not be available.
The SUDS Committee has examined in detail the measures we might take in order to comply with the terms of the amended hire agreement, and has given thorough consideration to the implications for our planned production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses. We are all impatient to get back to live theatre. However we were forced to conclude that the time is not yet ripe. The modifications we would have to make would inevitably compromise the quality of a production, and even our best efforts could be defeated should any member of the team fail a Covid test before or during the run. We were mindful also that the attempt to put on our production might entail risks for our audiences as well as our group.
In this continuing climate of uncertainty we have regretfully decided that once again we must defer our plans. We recognize that the cast and crew for Les Liaisons Dangereuses have shown immense patience and commitment over many months, and we are disappointed that the work which has already gone into the production has not yet come to fruition. But we remain determined to bring this show to the stage as soon as circumstances permit, and will use our best efforts to keep the project alive in the meantime. We continue to liaise with the University and are ready to grasp the earliest opportunity, when circumstances allow, to resume our normal activities by staging Les Liaisons Dangereuses and other shows we are planning for.
In the meantime, you can watch excerpts from our online rehearsal that we held in May 2021!
