Play Reading

Monday 9th March at 7.30pm of The Love of the Nightingale by Timberlake Wertenbaker in the Wilson Room, upstairs at The University Arms, 197 Brook Hill, Sheffield.

First produced in 1989, The Love of the Nightingale is a modern take on a Greek Tragedy. It is a feminist scrutiny of patriarchal violence, showing how women’s voices will always find a way, against all odds. This play offers a wide range of opportunities for reading, from principal cast to Greek chorus. Recommended by SUDS member Charlie Richardson, she says: “It is challenging, beautiful, dark, hopeful and full of fierce roles!”

Plays for 2026

The School for Scandal by Sheridan, directed by David Walker.

This perennial classic springs to life again as our production runs the gamut of Sheridan’s irresistible comic scenarios.

The rumour-mongers of Lady Sneerwell’s motley clique rampage through high society, ruining reputations as they go. But in the end, their hapless, loveable victims turn the tables on the trolls and hypocrites,  –  and goodness prevails as it always must!

Two hundred and fifty years after it was written, ‘The School for Scandal’ remains one of the funniest landmarks of English comedy.

Save the date: performances will be Wednesday 15th – Saturday 18th April 2026.

The Hypochondriac by Moliere, in the acclaimed modern translation by Roger McGough, directed by Christine Heery. This version of the classic comedy was recently seen at the Crucible Theatre and performances will be in November 2026, dates to be confirmed.
