For over fifty years, SUDS has played a key role in amateur theatre and local culture in and
around Sheffield. We are renowned for our performances of Shakespeare, classics such as
She Stoops to Conquer, The Cherry Orchard and The Importance of Being Earnest, and high
quality modern drama, such as Top Girls, Arcadia and Albion.
We have always aimed at professional standards and rely purely on members’ subscriptions
and income from ticket sales to maintain the quality of our productions. However, we have
significant overhead costs over which we have no control, chiefly rental charges for the
spaces we use for rehearsal, performance and costume storage. In recent years these
charges have increased significantly.
Even with sold-out productions, such as our recent Macbeth, we have struggled to break
even. We were recently compelled reluctantly to raise our ticket prices.
If we passed on all the costs of each production, the price of a ticket to one of our shows
would be £25. We believe this would be beyond the reach of many of our supporters and
would discourage young theatre-goers from experiencing our productions.
This is why, to cover our costs, we are making a special appeal for donations from our
members and supporters. A number of regular donations would allow us to maintain our
ticket prices at an accessible level and help secure our future as a provider of top-quality
theatre.
We’re inviting you to consider making annual donations of £20 – £100. If you feel you could
offer financial support at any level, please get in touch with our treasurer, Ian Brownlee, at

We would love to hear from you!
