Mission statement
Sheffield University Drama Society is a diverse and inclusive company creating high calibre
productions of classic and modern theatre.
We focus on quality and enjoyment, with wider opportunities such as play-readings,
workshops and joint events in partnership with the wider community.
Whether you are interested in being on stage or working behind the scenes, SUDS provides
a creative and fun environment where you can develop your talent and help us to bring
exceptional productions to our appreciative audience.
Our History
We are a popular amateur drama society that has been entertaining audiences for over 50 years. SUDS has its origins in the Staff Dramatic Society and retains close links with the University of Sheffield.
Our membership still includes University staff, past and present, and their families, but a connection with the University is not necessary. We are always keen to welcome new members from all walks of life.
New members are regularly cast in our productions, or incorporated into our technical support teams, where appropriate training can be given. So whether you are an actor, or keen to get involved in anything from set design, costume, stage management, or lighting and sound, to marketing or front of house roles, we’d love to hear from you.
Our Productions
SUDS has a longstanding reputation for quality productions, many of which are not generally tackled by amateurs.
We normally stage two plays a year in the well-equipped University Drama Studio. Alongside our main productions, we also stage occasional short performances and showcase new writing, often as rehearsed readings.
We have worked in collaboration with local groups and charities, including The Friends of Porter Valley, and have performed in a number of locations, including Bolsover Castle and Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet.
Recently SUDS made its first appearance at the Buxton Fringe performing a piece of new writing.
You can find out more about what’s coming up next on our Facebook page and Instagram page. Members also receive a regular newsletter which keeps them up to date with plans for future productions and all the Society’s activities.
Our constitution
The SUDS Constitution outlines the legal basis of the Society and the rights of its members, as approved from July 2018.
