A brilliant and timeless comedy of manners from 1777, The School for Scandal offers a scathing satire of the gossip, hypocrisy, and moral vanity prevalent in 18th-century London high society. The plot centers on a malicious group of socialites, who use rumor and innuendo to destroy reputations, with their intrigues weaving through the lives of the bickering Sir Peter and Lady Teazle, and the two contrasting Surface brothers: the seemingly virtuous Joseph and the genuinely kind, though reckless, Charles. Through a masterfully crafted series of mistaken identities and the famous screen scene, the play ultimately rewards true virtue while hilariously exposing the devastating power and utter foolishness of scandal as a social weapon.
